Some directories require you to pay a substantial fee just to have your submissions to them reviewed and it is usually not refundable, so you are going to want to do it right the first time.

Now that you have your website entered in the popular directories, you can spend a little bit of time improving their performance within the search engines. One thing that will help you out is to use as much text as possible. The reason for this is that the search engine spiders will only be able to search your text for matches. There are too many problems with being able to search images and flashy additions to a site for their relation to a search that has been entered in the search engine, and therefore they just don't do it. Also be sure to optimize the keywords that you are using throughout your site. If you have better, more common keywords then you are going to get better traffic, it is as simple as that.

Also be sure that you us META tags in all of your web pages. The META tag for keywords is not quite as important as the one for a description of your page, but it still helps. The description tag will tell the search engine what to display below the link in their search results that your site appears in. Many internet browsers skim this quickly to see if they would be interested in the content on your website, so be sure to be to the point and inform the internet browser of all the information that they can find on your website. Be sure to keep the description as short as possible as extra words can be cut off preventing the information you want from being displayed.

If you have been fairly successful in getting traffic to your site previously, however, then there is not much added benefit to doing this. Most search engines will notice that your site has been getting hits and it will be indexed by them already.
